Raise a Green Dog!

Raise a Green Dog!

Our plan to build a homemade dog waste composter!

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 03:23 AM PDT

Now that we getting settled into our cabin here in Northeast Georgia, it's time to start building our new dog waste composter.

When we lived in Indiana we were on a city water/sewage system, so we flushed our dog doo. That's what we, and the EPA, recommend for anyone on a city system.

We've always known that if you live in the country and have a private septic system, that composting is always the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of your dog's waste, and so as not to fill up your septic tank. But we didn't know if we wanted to compost in the ground or try vermicasting, also known as worm poo composting.

Over the weekend, we searched on the Internet for some instructions, talked with some friends who have created their own dog poo composting systems, weighed and evaluated all the info and settled on a plan that's right for our region of the US, the number of dogs in our household, and the type of soil that we have here, and decided to build a dog waste composter.

We have blogged about making a dog waste composting system in the past, so we decided we wanted to also share this info with an additional audience on nother site we frequent called, Squidoo. Squidoo is a site where you can create 'lenses' or snapshots about any subject that interests you. Our sister site, JohannTheDog.com, has nearly 150 educational and entertaining pages on Squidoo about dogs; a few of them about being green.

Over the weekend we created the lens, and outlined all the instructions we intend to follow to create our homemade dog waste composting system. To our great surprise, we woke up yesterday morning to find out that our lens, How to make your own dog waste composter, was named 'Lens of the Day!' It is a great honor to be selected by Squidoo from the nearly 3 Million lenses they have on the site as LOTD. The best part is that the lens received hundreds of visitors yesterday, as well as many, many great comments and answers to our poll, 'How do you dispose of your dog's waste.'

We invite you to visit the lens, read through the comments and let us know your thoughts about dog waste composting.

And we'll keep you posted on the building, creating and using of our new dog waste composter in the future, so watch for follow up posts, K?
