Tanner Models his Homemade Bandage

Poor Tanner has been struggling to heal a wound under his jaw since before the holidays. He has spent more than his share of time in an E-collar, those anti-scratch, anti-itch lampshade-looking things that require an active pup like Tanner to be a little less active.

Because the e-collar must fit snugly around the neck, this was impeding air flow around the wound, and thereby slowing the healing process. I had to get more creative, if we were to meet with success.

Since Tanner is not one to scratch and itch at every little thing, I figured the location of this wound would work to my advantage. So, with the goal of healing in mind, I set out to come up with a bandage that wouldn't annoy him and wouldn't impede activity or air flow.

Tanner is wearing his neckerchief above, made of cotton fabric, so it breathes well. Notice that it is wide, so as to cover the wound completely, just in case he decides to scratch the area. Also, I tied it just tight enough that it stays above his collar, assuring that it does not slip down off of the area we're trying to keep covered.

Tanner's Bandage ties like a Bandanna
Tanner is delighted to be free of the e-collar, and doesn't mind the bandage at all. So far, he isn't even aware of anything different, as he has often worn banannas and is quite used to them.

Best of all, this solution will allow him to play at the dog park and practice agility safely, all the while still keeping his tender spot covered and safe from scratching. Tanner's reward? He got to play F-E-T-C-H (I have to spell it or he goes crazy!) at the dog park. He's sleeping soundly now, probably dreaming of tennis balls. Good boy, Tanner!

ServiceDogTags - Would you drive without a seatbelt?

I hope you answered no to that question. Lets face it, driving the roads can get pretty darn crazy and wearing a seat belt is a simple way to protect yourself in an accident, right?

So why would you not protect your dog with a seat belt also?

I know you'd feel awful if you were involved in an accident and your dog was injured - so I put together a short list of simple products I found that you can use to protect your dog.

I hope it helps. Click here ----->  Traveling Dogs

Doby and Lola

Doby and Lola

Bone to pick...

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 06:38 AM PST

Hey guys-
It's Doby here and I have to tell you something about Lola. She is the worst! First of all, mom and dad got em FIRST! Then, a year ago, mom decided she needed a new puppy for Valentine's Day (her favorite holiday). So, she convinced dad and dad being the sucker that he is, found Lola for her. Mom tried to act like Lola was for me. A new "friend" to play with. And at first, Lola was great. But, I have no discovered that Lola is much more conniving than I originally thought. First of all- she is always trying to snuggle with mom and dad. I always try to push her off, but then I get yelled out that I shouldn't be so "mean and jealous". Jealous!? I don't even know what that is! Then- there are 100 million more pictures of her. It isn't MY fault that I can't stand still long enough to take a picture! Also, Lola knows how to beg for people-food better than me. Actually, she doesn't beg, she just sits there looking cute (yuck!) and she gets food. I, on the other hand, just snatch it as quick as I can.

I guess Lola isn't ALWAYS bad. She does snuggle me when I'm cold and share her bed with me. She even distracts mom and dad when I'm doing something wrong. She also always lets me get the first treat. Like last night- mom threw Lola a treat and Lola just let it smack her in the face and let me get it off the floor. Lola's also the greatest treat-catcher of all small dogs. She's been trying to teach me- but I don't really care.

Anyway, I still think Lola needs to get over herself. She always thinks she is the Princess. Well- I guess she can be a princess if I can be the Prince. :)

Here is a throwback picture of us when we first became brother and sister. I'm much cuter.

Raise a Green Dog!

Raise a Green Dog!

Listen to my Mum, Leslie, talk about Raising a Green Dog!

Posted: 03 Feb 2010 05:28 AM PST

Not too long ago, my Mum did an interview with Cindy Scott of The Dog Zone and talked all about Raising a Green Dog!

You can listen to Mum's interview by visiting my-zen-dog.com, and then clicking on the Dog Zone Radio Show, and looking for the Green Dog Archive. Or you can listen right from here!

Cindy Scott started Dogs Etc. in 1997 to help educate owners about their pets. Her lifelong love and admiration of animals took a serious turn when in 1989 her beloved dog was hit and killed by a car. The loss sent her a mission to find the most effective training to prevent such tragedy and then to spread the word.

With over 15 years professional training experience, Cindy helps pets and owners bridge the communication gap. Using positive techniques that are as fun as they are effective, training is a joy not a chore. The result is a happy, healthier pet that is truly a member of the family.

We thank Cindy for having Mum on the show and hope you enjoy the interview!
