Hol-ee Rollers Giveaway to Help Small Pups Play

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 01:15 PM PDT

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

Oliver enjoyed this toy soooo much. The holes made it easy to pick up and lighter weight as well. They also allowed for a treat to be inserted which made all the difference in the world for enjoyment. Today we'll give out our supply of these to 8 lucky pups that are furry family members of Kristen (the coupon boss), Lisa W., C. Richman, Bonnie, L Murley, Summer, Clavel, and Katie Lynn Mitchell.

Thanks to everyone who participated. Your entries were vigorous and enthusiastic, which always puts a smile on my face. You can be sure the folks at JWPet loved it too.

Be sure to send your address to me at AllThingsDogBlog@gmail.com. I know this is a different email address than you may have been used to using. We've added a separate email to assure that nothing falls through the cracks of my very busy email box.

Packages from All Things Dog Blog generally include a few surprises. You'll enjoy the fun as you and Fido unpack your box and discover the excitement that lies within. Happy tails!

Saving Your Dog and Yourself in the Event of a Gator Attack

"I Caught Him, Mom"
"You're Safe Now"

Next week's post for the Saturday Pet Blogger Hop will provide information on the dangers of nesting season and the fierce protectiveness of mama gators for their babies--all good info for those of us who enjoy walking our dogs near fresh water areas.

The time of year for nesting and hatching is approaching soon. In promising to share this  knowledge with you, I earlier mentioned another giveaway of gator toys, that were so very popular last month

I'll get to this month's gator giveaway, sponsored by Petmate, after I share some life-saving tips:

  • Steer clear of lake and riverfronts that are notable for gator presence. This is particularly important if you enjoy walking at dawn, dusk or in after dark. Not only are the gators actively hunting at this time, but they are also quite difficult to see. Your safest way to enjoy the water view is away from the shoreline.
  • When walking in marshy areas with thick vegetation along the shore, be extra vigilant about watching ahead, and keep a safe distance from these areas.
  • If you spot an adult gator (more than 3 feet in length), no matter how small, give it a wide berth of more than 15-20 feet, particularly during mating and nesting season. Do not allow your dog to bark at the gator, as this will be perceived as aggression and may provoke an attack. Leave the area if your dog ceases to bark on command.
  • Don't fool yourself into believing you can out-swim a gator because they have shorter legs. This is a myth; gators can exceed Michael Phelps' speed and stamina, so swimming in gator inhabited waters is risky business.
  • Harness your dog for walks in these areas, to give extra leverage if you must restrain your Fido from his desire to protect you or attack this predator. Fido will rarely win as the jaw strength of these beasts is considerable.
  • If you notice a gator sunning itself on land, make some noise to alert it to your presence. Generally, this will cause the gator to retreat back into the water, giving you a safer passing. Do Not Surprise a gator by approaching quietly. They will attack out of self-defense if you get close without the gator becoming aware of your presence.
  • If you suddenly encounter a gator up close on land run for it. Although they can run relatively fast for short distances, they tire more quickly and often cannot beat the average adult in a race. It should be no surprise that I will suggest you run AWAY from the water, if possible. Leading them toward unfamiliar territory will make they wary of the chase.
  • If you are attacked by a gator, fight back. Go for the back of the throat, the eyes, notrils and ears. Each of these areas are highly sensitive. The back of a gator's tongue has a flap that controls influx of water, allowing them to open their mouth while submerged. If you find yourself in the jaws of a gator in water, summon your best efforts to damage this flap. If this flap becomes dislodged or damaged, a gator will generally release you to protect himself from drowning.
  • Finally, get prompt medical attention for any gator-inflicted injury, no matter how minor. Their mouths are heavily infested with bacteria, meaning you are at risk for infection.

Did I scare you? I hope not; knowledge is power. Let's wrap this educational information in a fun ending. I have 5 booda squeak bottle gator toys to give away to your gator hunting fidos. These squeak bottle toys have a recyclable plastic bottle inside that has a special, re-usable lid. This lid is the source of the squeak. When the bottle becomes squashed, simply replace it with a new water bottle, replacing the squeaky lid on the new bottle. Then reinsert the fresh bottle inside the gator toy cover, for more gator hunting fun. Don't forget your earplugs. This fella is a noisy one.

Fido's Follow Friday? Let's Call it Fido's Freebie Friday!

FreebieFriday

You've probably seen the #ff or #FF on Facebook and Twitter. I've even seen a few on blogposts. Many pet bloggers use #WW or #ww to bid hello to their fellow pet lovers. Have you been scratching your head and wondering what sort of code this is? You're not alone.

When I first got involved in blogging I quickly heard about Wordless Wednesday, posts that included few, if any words--only photos. Some bloggers use this post as an opportunity to give themselves free time, others have a caption contest, and still others enjoy dubbing it something different. I've often called it Wordless Woofing Wednesday, since I write primarily about dogs.

Follow Friday has morphed into many different meanings. I'm adding to this confusion with the addition of Fido's Freebie Friday, a weekly blog hop where bloggers can list their giveaways and readers can shop for free giveaways enter.

Watch for this fun feature as it grows. I hope it will become your favorite way to kick off the weekend.  The hop opens at 4 PM on Thursdays and remains open until Fridays at midnite. Happy #FF!

Chicken Stew Biscuits for Fido: High in Protein and Vitamins

Leftover Chicken Stew
 Makes Great Dog Biscuits

Saving money on your pack's chow doesn't always have to be about clipping coupons or watching for sales. You do have options for supplementing your pup's diet without compromising his health or your wallet.
I've been inspired by other dog moms to not only cook some food to supplement Tanner and Oliver's kibble, but also I now use my leftovers to make all sorts of yummy goodies. This saves me big bucks on all those pricey treats, although I have to admit that my dogs love to sample a variety. Cooking at home helps to widen that smorgasbord.

A simple stewed chicken made of healthy, low-fat, organic chicken breasts, organic broth and vegetables (we used carrots) is easy to cook up in your crockpot with very little effort. I cut this up and scoop a few spoonfuls on the boys' kibble some evenings, to give them that home-cooked feel of a warm meal.

What's really great, though, is that when leftovers reach the breaking point (eat them quick or toss them) these cooked meats and vegetables make great dog biscuits that are simple and healthy. Here's a sample recipe that we renovated to make these fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants biscuits, which do not require rolling. This makes them much faster to prepare than those adorable bone-shaped ones you've seen here before.

Organic Chicken and Carrot Stew Biscuits

Instructions:
  1. After chicken and veggies are cooked thoroughly in the crockpot, cool till they reach a comfortable working temperature.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Place the chicken and veggies (any portions you have available) in your food processor with the blade in place and process until you have a smooth textured, babyfood-like mixture that is easy to stir.
  4. Remove and replace the blade with the kneading blade.
  5. Add one egg and mix in briefly.
  6. Add a few tablespoons of broth and 1/2 cup organic whole wheat flour at a time, until you have a stiff dough, much like cookie dough.
  7. Break off a tennis ball sized portion and press out on a clean surface until an even thickness of about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.
  8. Using a small juice glass dipped into some flour, cut biscuits and add remaining dough back to the batch.
  9. Continue till all dough has been used.
  10. Bake for about 10-13 minutes at 350 degrees. Ovens and ingredients vary, so watch your first batch carefully for timing.
  11. Store a week's worth of biscuits in your refrig. These make a nice substitution for some kibble at mealtime, or a generous afternoon snack that is healthy and satisfying.
  12. Freeze the remainder in small enough portions to use within a week.
  13. Don't forget to pat yourself on the back when your Fido devours his yummy, homemade biscuit that you provided. Unconditional love most certainly can be enhanced with great chow!
