Why Puppies are Like Birds

If you've never spent much time around birds as pets, you may not know that they mimic humans in order to learn to speak. One of these days I'll have to fill you in on my Parakeet, Peekaboo, that had a 20 word vocabulary, and could corner any cat that came within 10 feet of him. It's one of the many reasons they can be such endearing pets. But I digress. Speaking of mimicking,  check out this puppy:

The message I get from watching this is that puppies learn their vocalizations before they open their eyes. This is a time when their senses are limited to smell (primary), and touch. Without sight, it appears that this pup is attempting to answer the call of...."not the mama!" Interesting huh? It might be a fascinating experiment to raise a puppy from birth, with a very quiet household, and see if the pup grows up to be a less verbal one. Hmmm...
