Mind Traps Dog training isn't rocket science, but at it's best it does require critical thinking and an understanding of how dogs learn. As mere mortals, when it comes to dog training and behavior we often bark up the wrong tree. Train with your brain and don't get stuck in one of these common mind traps!
Pressure Cooker Behavior Modification - Don't build a time bomb. Unhappy with how your dog's acting? Then proactively teach her what you want her to do and provide appropriate outlets for energetic outbursts rather than simply squashing unwanted behavior until your dog is as flat as a pancake!
Equating Control With Cruelty - Like it or not, we do have control over our dogs lives and favorite resources. Dogs thrive on the clarity of consistent consequences. You're gonna give her that belly rub anyway, so don't waste it! Use your dog's favorite activities, treats, and toys as daily-life rewards for desired behavior.
The Dominance Dilemma - Think you've got to dominate your dog to train him? Think again. Just as it's silly to think that control equals cruelty, it's equally foolish to think that clear direction must be obtained through physical dominance, pack-order postulation, or posturing.

Training or Teaching? Another way to avoid falling prey to the mind traps mentioned above is to change the way you think about dog training.
Why not replace the idea of training as an extra chore in your day with the notion of teaching your best friend to reach his very best, like the Amazing Jesse!
Even in an animal shelter, learning can be fun and launch a" chain of education, enrichment, and positive energy!"
