 is Here to Help

Tanner and I had a Pawsome idea today. Inside our totally cool computer is a list of links to all the categories and topics that he and I have written about; around 400 articles are in our archives.

We'll be setting up an archives page soon, but for now, we're going to help you dig up the goods the funnest way--FETCH and RETRIEVE. Tanner's an expert at this.

If you'd like to play this game with him, you can get there by many routes:
  • Click the picture above to get to the Fetch and Retrieve page
  • Click the link under the picture
  • Look for the same picture in our sidebar and click it
  • Click the links by the same picture in the sidebar
  • Click any of the links in this post that say Fetch and Retrieve, even this one
It's hard to get lost finding the Fetch and Retrieve page, because there are links to it all over the place. We really do want you to find everything you're digging for.

We're almost done, now. There's just one last thing to do. When you are finished herding up all the topics you're looking for on the Fetch and Retrieve page, you'll need to know the route back here. Once again, just click on Tanner's picture. There's one on the Fetch and Retrieve page that looks just like the one above, so you won't need to find a hound to sniff it out for you.

Have fun playing Fetch and Retrieve. We hope you find something you can really chew on. Happy tails!

Green Day – 21 Guns (Official Video)

Posted: 02 Jun 2010 05:47 AM PDT

Do you know what’s worth fighting for?
When it’s not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away?
And you feel yourself suffocating?

Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You’re in ruins

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

When you’re at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul.

Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn’t pass
Nothing’s ever built to last
You’re in ruins

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

Did you try to live on your own?
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone

When it’s time to live and let die
And you can’t get another try
Something side this heart has died
You’re in ruins…

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

One, twenty-one guns
Lay down your arms
Give up the fight
One, twenty-one guns
Throw up your arms into the sky,
You and I

Training Talk: Excessive Barking

Question: My father works at a major university and because he has an office within his own laboratory, he is allowed to bring his standard poodle to work every day. He started this tradition with his previous dog, an adorable Wheaten Terrier who even rated his own nameplate on the office door! The problem with his poodle, Penne, is that she barks her head off at my dad all the time. She wants attention, and he’s nervous that she’s going to mess things up for the other dog owners there! How can my dad curb Penne’s barking habit? – JT, Evanston

Answer: It’s wonderful that your dad has the opportunity to bring his best friend to work with him on a regular basis. And, you bring up an important point about excessive barking and its implications in the workplace (as well as at home). Let’s face it, unless you work at a doggy day care or as a dog trainer, a bark-a-holic is not an ideal office mate.

Looking at things from the dog’s point of view, we need to remember that barking is a very self-reinforcing behavior. In addition to providing a means of communicating with other dogs, animals and people, barking gives dogs something to do and, in many instances, helps calm a dog’s nerves and alleviate boredom.

When excessive barking becomes a behavioral issue for an owner, the first thing to look at is the underlying cause. Is the dog alert barking out of fear or nervousness, play barking to engage passersby or barking for attention? By identifying the underlying cause of the barking, it becomes easier to create and implement an appropriate training program.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Dog Owners

Walking Your Dogs Beside You
Helps to Establish You as the Boss

  1. Establish yourself as the leader--no questions asked. Set rules for your dog and don't allow any exceptions. Help avoid fears and anxiety by displaying your leadership and confidence at all times when your dog might otherwise become fearful or nervous.
  2. Provide your dog with daily vigorous exercise for about an hour each day.
  3. Mental exercises such as training, mind games and problem solving toys stimulate the dog's brain, helping to keep him calmer and challenged. Also, physical challenges, if your dog is physically fit and able, are good for your dog's confidence. Games like FETCH and swimming can be accomplished at home or nearby. Group games such as Agility, Flyball, Herding, Tracking and such are excellent physical and mental exercises that can help a dog get in tune with his breed instincts or just have a lot of fun trying.
  4. Socialization with humans and other dogs should begin at a young age and continue throughout your dog's life.
  5. Beginning with leash training, train your dog from a young age, and never, ever, stop practicing or adding to this training.
  6. Feed your dog a healthy, AAFCO (Assn. of American Feed Control Officials) approved dog food, or get your vet's input on homemade food guidelines, to assure proper nutrition for your dog at every age and stage.
  7. Affection is earned when your dog is displaying good behavior and acting calm. This is the only time your dog should receive treats or affection. This rule of thumb will assure that you do not ever unknowingly encourage a behavior that is unwanted.

Victoria's Proposed Dog Laws

Posted: 31 May 2010 07:46 PM PDT

G'day Dog Lovers,

Have you heard about the proposed changes to Victoria's dangerous dog laws?

If these changes come into effect, council rangers will be able to kill unregistered dangerous dogs found roaming the streets, and owners will not have the right to appeal. Fines will also increase for owners who do not register their restricted breeds of dogs or who breach the terms of registration.

Premier John Brumby told reporters "This is a stronger policy, it's a tougher policy, there will be appeal rights that will be removed so the power will be in the hands of councils to make sure they can deal with dangerous dogs that reoffend or restricted breeds that are not complying with the terms of their registration."

We at Dogs Life have for years been complaining about the ineffectiveness of breed specific legislation (check out our March/April 2010 issue for more details) and these proposed changes are particularly worrying.

The prospect of giving council rangers the power to make a life or death decision about dogs puts the power in the hands of one person. What about a fair trial?

And what about the difficulty associated with identifying a dangerous or restricted breed? A couple of years ago I undertook a 2-day course on dog breed identification run by Dogs NSW - most of the other course attendees were council rangers. One of the activities we did was to look at photographs of mixed-breed dogs and try to identify which breeds were present in their make-up. Each photo threw up a range of different suggestions for contributing breeds from everyone in the class and even the experts had trouble agreeing on some photos. This was a perfect demonstration of how difficult it can be to identify dog breeds - so how can we give councils the power to put down a dog just because they think it looks like a dangerous breed?

Lawyers For Animals have put together a detailed response to the proposed laws here - http://lawyersforanimals.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/lfa-dangerous-dogs-bill-submn-24-5-10.pdf It's definitely worth reading.

What do you think about the proposed changes?
