Changes at All Things Dog Blog... Posted: 30 Jun 2010 11:00 AM PDT by Carrie Boyko (c) Carrie Boyko Tanner Announces Good News for Adopt a Dog Park All the dogs at All Things Dog Blog have been itching to have their own blog. I told Xena, Tanner and Oliver that it is a lot of work, but they assured me they can handle a tip a day. Starting today, you can read their tips at 5 Minutes for Fido, where the my pack will take turns giving us ideas for happy pups and happy families.  Tanner won the drawing to get his picture on the blog. It's a totally silly picture, so Oliver and Xena have been teasing him. Such is the lot of a 'cover dog'; somebody is always going to be jealous. Well, folks, it seems that all good things must come to an end.  After nearly a year (18 answers in 11 months) of answering your dog health questions, Dr. Jacki, with her thriving practice and growing, young family, finds herself with a bit too much on her plate. I'm hoping she'll pop in for an occasional guest post, but there's more....keep reading. This column was the start of something big for All Things Dog Blog, and I will be forever grateful to her for helping me get off the ground. The impetus for the blog's growth, I credit the ASK THE VET column as the beginning of the blog's sudden expansion, its rise to an appearance on the Technorati Top 100 Pet Sites, and the addition of more regular columns to meet the many needs of my readers. ASK THE VET: Why is My Dog So Restless? Posted: 30 Jun 2010 05:00 AM PDT by Jacki Bert (c) reader copyright on file Granville, a Newfoundland Dear Dr. Jacki: My dog is a 9 year old Newfoundland who is showing his age but is healthy. I have had him checked by our veterinarian for an odd behavior and gotten no reason for it. Perhaps you will have an idea. Choppie (short for Porkchop) has gradually become more restless at times. He will pace from room to room, asking to go outside, then wanting to come back in, then back outside and so on. He does not cry or moan or scratch, and there are no signs of pain. I cannot figure out why he is so restless. This is not all the time, just sometimes for short periods. Any thoughts? Thank you.  ------------------------------------- Hi Johnny: It is difficult to say for sure why the restlessness and pacing, but it could be a medical reason (infection, neurologic) or behavioral.  It depends on his age and upon a physical exam.  If you haven't done so already, have your vet check him over really well and consider having bloodwork run on him.   A Newfoundland becomes a senior much earlier than a small dog so it is important to run bloodwork yearly to help prevent any serious issues.  Hope it works out to be nothing!!   Dr. Jacki Dr. Jacki, D.V.M. Why? Because dog training is as much about teaching you the skills you need to know in order to communicate effectively with your dog as it is about teaching your dog skills.   Dogs are always learning. Whether we’re actively teaching them or not our dogs are constantly trying new behaviors on to see what works and what doesn’t. Training allows us as caregivers to let our dogs know which behaviors will be rewarded and which ones will be stopped. What’s more, positive reinforcement training helps to establish and nurture the bond between dog and human, and helps ensure that your dog will respond consistently to your instructions.   It is essential that the dog trainer you select uses Positive Reinforcement Dog Training techniques. Positive reinforcement trainers use Dog Treats, attention, Dog Toys, or praise to reward the dog for appropriate behavior. Positive reinforcement training conditions reliable behavior through reward versus the dog working to avoid a correction as with traditional methods. Training techniques should never involve yelling, choking, shaking the scruff, tugging on the leash, alpha rolling (forcing the dog onto his back), or other actions that frighten or inflict pain.   Where can I find a dog trainer? Talking to your friends and neighbors is a good place to start. Also check with your veterinarian, local humane society or dog groomer. Don’t assume that a trainer’s membership in a dog trainer association qualifies him as a suitable instructor: Not all associations’ membership criteria will meet your expectations. Also, because no government agency regulates or licenses trainers, it’s that much more important to investigate a dog trainer’s qualifications before enrolling in a class. Ask them to describe their training methods, how many years of experience they have, and how they were educated.
