Planet Dog Fetches Great Fun for 5 Fidos

It seems that Tanner is not the only Fetcher around. This week's review of the Wood Chuck brought Retrievers of all sizes and types scrambling for a chance at this great throwing tool. Could that many dog owners possible throw as badly as I do?

Tanner and Jack, shown above, both have the same Orbee-Tuff ball, so I know Jack must enjoy his too. We have been extremely impressed with its durability in daily swimming and fetching play in the pool. Fortunately I don't have to throw very far to give Tanner a good swim in the pool.

LeashLocket: Review and Giveaway

I've made no secret of my concerns about retractable leashes. That's my disclaimer. However, I recently discovered that I can and do find the LeashLocket to be a useful tool for certain specialized applications. So, as I backpeddle on my previous notes, I'll explain why and how you can use this tool to your benefit.

If you and your dog enjoy hiking in the woods, a retractable leash allows you to give Fido some exploratory distance, without losing him to a scent among the trees. Of course any retractable leash will do this. What's special about the LeashLocket is its unique collar attachment feature. This is what won me over.

Hidden inside the package and out of view is the sturdy, elastic collar attachment. This can be removed and placed around any width dog collar. It has a heavy-duty snap that attaches to the collar and a magnetic snap that connects to the LeashLocket, holding it securely on your dog's collar until you need it again. It removes quickly and easily to allow you to give up that headache of carrying your dog's leash while he plays, or locating a place to store it safely.

Why would you want to attach the leash to Fido's collar? I can think of quite a few times when this may be handy:

You've arrived at the dog park and are wary of hanging your leash on the fence while you and Fido play. Simply attach the retracted LeashLocket to his collar and you can both be off and running.
If Fido's leash is connected to his collar and danger or excitement approaches, you can quickly grab the handle from his collar. It will release immediately and you now have control over the situation.
When you arrive at your destination with Fido, and he is no longer required to be on leash, you don't have to worry about where to put the leash. Simply attach it to his collar and when you're ready to leave, there will be no more seeking out your original stash.
I have to admit the handle is very comfortable to use. I have small hands and am reviewing a large LeashLocket, so I had my concerns about the comfort of using this handle. These concerns were quickly quelled when I grabbed it from Tanner's collar as a friend approached with his dog. I found myself examining the shape and realizing that it mimics my hand and therefore works perfectly without the typical loop handle.
A traditional loop handle is available for purchase on LeashLocket's site. For those who prefer their standard leash handle, this easy-to-attach handle can be hooked to the loop on one side of the LeashLocket, allowing you to hold the loop the way you may have become accustomed. This loop, being small and easy to store, will not diminish the advantages of the product significantly. It can easily be stashed in your pocket or hooked to a belt loop. I would not recommend attaching this loop to your dog's collar or leaving it on the LeashLocket, as there may be safety issues with this.
Having spent a couple of years in agility training with Tanner and Oliver, I can see how the LeashLocket may have some uses there. Basic training in agility often involves the use of a short leash on and off; sometimes that leash must be stowed. This storage position will allow it to be quickly used when needed without the additional step of reattaching it to the collar.
Finally, the large LeashLocket may appear heavy, but actually weighs only 4 oz., while the small LeashLocket weighs just under 3 oz.

All Things Dog Blog recommends that this tool be used at a heel length (walking beside handler) except when hiking, and only with dogs who are leash-trained properly without excessive pulling. Using a retractable leash when other people or animals are within range can be a trip hazard and would be a reason to shorten the length of the leash to a heel position.

Healthy, homemade sweet potato chews for dogs!

It's that time of year...time for sweet potatoes! If you are out shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, be sure and pick up some extra sweet potatoes to make a homemade, yummy, healthy treat for your dog!

I love sweet potatoes, they are a super yummy and really good for me; and they are a great alternative to rawhide chews, which you may not know are not very good for dogs.

Not only do they present a choking hazard, they don't digest very easily and could become lodged in the intestines creating a dangerous health hazard. In addition, many rawhides are processed with chemicals which aren't good for dogs either.

So what's a dog to do? Have your Mum make some yummy homemade sweet potato chews!

Here is the recipe we use, courtesy of The Dog Treat Kitchen:

Sweet Potato Chews for Dogs

Wash a sweet potato (organic is best and we like to peel them).
Cut down the middle lengthwise.
Then cut long lengthwise slices about 1/3 to 1/4 of an inch wide and place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet (use a stainless steel, for healthier cooking).
Put in the oven at 250 degrees for about 3 hours.

This leaves them kind of chewy, but you could also bake them a little longer (about 20-30 minutes) to get them crunchy. Keep them refrigerated for up to three weeks. You can freeze them for up to 4 months.

Oh, and you can waffle cut them for more fun. Enjoy! And let us know how your dog likes them!

#BarkFriday Twitter Party: RTing During the Party

A couple of weeks ago I added to my archive of Twitter Party tips with a post on keeping up during a Twitter party. Things move very fast at a Twitter party and sometimes it is tough to know what you're supposed to be doing. My main point in that post was to remind you that watching your host (or the guest expert if you're following that conversation) will help you keep up with whatever you need to be doing, if anything.

My bad! Although that is great advice, I left out one very important tip, so today you get just one little piece of kibble that will help make your Twitter party experience more enjoyable. You and all your fellow party guests may want to RT important statements made by the host or anyone whose input affects the next step in the party, such as a sponsor.

For instance, if I suggest that a prize drawing is coming up and then ask a question, you may want to help everyone see that tweet by RTing it. If they do the same, it will help you too.

Those of you who were at #SafeHowlOween probably noticed at least one or two of these RTs. We had some experienced Twitter party guests who were doing their good deed, helping to get the hosts' tweets out to everyone.

Ask the Dog Trainer: Stinky Collar Issues

Dear Michael,
My dog has had so many collars in his life that I have a drawer full of them. Open it and you'll find an odor that resembles that of a dirty dog. I am not a dirty person. In fact I wash his collars regularly and still they take on this odor that starts to bother me. I have tried different fibers such as cotton, polyester, nylon, and am now about to tackle hemp and bamboo which I hear are the greenest things going. What do you recommend for these issues? Surely you have experienced many of the different fabrics and have an opinion. What about the vinyl collars? I worry about fungus since it seems they would hold moisture in. Please give me some ideas for a smell-free collar. I love to hug my dog and not smell dirty dog.

Dear Jenetta,

Thank you for the opportunity to step out of my trainer role for just a bit. Folks ask me quite often which is the best collar for training their dog (flat buckle or clip collar), but rarely which one is the least stinky. I guess I get to switch my focus from bad behavior to bad B.O. Yay. Here's my best shot.

I did a bit of research, and you are not alone in your malodorous suffering. It turns out there is such a thing as a no-stink collar. It's made of rubber! Rubber, it turns out, is rank-resistant. Why? It doesn't absorb moisture, the source of the stench.

Now if you want to nip the noxious problem at its rancid source, look to your dog's food. A healthy diet will give you a more fragrant friend. Food affects funk, plain and simple. (Don't make me take you to the Indian Buffet to prove it). I'd also recommend keeping your dog brushed and bathed. Let collars dry in the sun, and make sure your dog is completely dry too. Remember the mephitic moisture rule.

One last thought, and this one is a bit controversial. Let the dog go naked. No grody collar in the all-natural, right? That's the way my dogs roll. We just use the collars for trips out and about. Of course you'd need your dog to be micro-chipped and very well trained. We don't want our dogs wandering the streets without I.D. That would surely stink.

We found this growing down the road from us and stopped to take a photo. The folks that are growing it were chopping some down that day and stripping it a bit. We saw they had used them as stakes in their garden. Wonder what else they are using it for?

Bamboo is really interesting stuff. Classified as a perennial evergreens, bamboos are some of the fastest growing plants in the world; some growing as fast as up to 100 cm (39 in) within a 24 hour period. (Bet that was another type than the ones we saw, but wow!)

In it's mature form, it's also used in clothing, shoes, furniture, water processing, landscaping, paper, kitchen utensils, flooring, fences and even as construction for bicycles. And that's just the beginning!

Adoptable Pets: A Tour of States In New Mexico

Sometimes when I read the bios on these adoptable dogs I just shudder. Bucky sounds like the perfect companion for Tanner, or most any family. She is an 8 year old purebred Chocolate Lab that is sociable, loves everyone, gets along with other dogs and is healthy. She take meds to prevent seizures but has no other health concerns and is a delightful companion. Bucky is in foster care in Tijeras, New Mexico, where she is waiting to find a permanent home.

Raven

Raven is a small, female Terrier mix with super cute ears, imho. I suppose you know my opinions may vary from yours, but I did fall in love with Raven's ears. Raven is available for adoption in Edgewood, New Mexico.

Keiser is a medium adult male long hair cat. He is available for adoption in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Duncan

Duncan's story caught my heartstrings and had me reaching for the tissues. He was found on the street, fending for himself. An abscess was immediately treated and he has healed and is a very friendly companion rabbit now. He has an area where the fur has not yet returned since healing of his wound, so he may appear a bit odd, yet it sounds like Duncan will win your heart if you give him a chance. He is available for adoption in Placitas, NM.

Doggie Housing Decisions: Selecting Your New Home with Fido in Mind

Depending on how you look at our economic situation right now, you may say that times are tough. Considering the historically low interest rates, you may say it's a great time to buy a home. If your financial situation is such that moving is an option, this is a great time to purchase a home. Prices are lower than in years and mortgage rates are unbelievable. With that in mind we've been tiptoeing into the "what's available" listings every so lightly.

Suddenly I'm realizing that selecting a home has taken on a whole new decision-making angle. When my children were young, the priorities were very different. Now I find myself wanting to check out the fenced-in yard for the dogs, swimming opportunities for Tanner, safe exploration areas for Oliver, street safety and neighborhood Fidos.

Hopefully I won't run into any BSL with a Golden and a Papillon. That would really put a damper on things. And how exactly do I go about finding out if the neighbors are not just dog-friendly, but open to dog socialization. Tanner tends to pout when a potential playmate (aka anything on 4 legs) doesn't agree to a meet-n-greet. How could they be so aloof?!

Back to the house...Homes with an upstairs need to have steps with some degree of safety built in for Oliver. He's small enough to slide through open stairways. Yikes! While Tanner will be very eager to have window views from all sides of the house, this is not what I want for him. Sometimes it is best he not be able to see whatever it is he's hearing. (Don't tell him I said that!)

Our neighborhood bear has been known to keep him running from window to window, yet so has a neighbor walking a dog.

I once read a clever, yet somewhat convincing article on the art of Feng Shui for dogs. Should I be considering the energy flow and floorplan for Tanner and Oliver? What if their proposed needs are different? Oh dear. This could really get sticky.

What are your suggestions on things I should be looking for? I need input here folks. Help!

Freezy Pups Frozen Dog Treats Surprise Us with Cool Weather Momentum

Tanner and Oliver absolutely loved reviewing the Freezy Pups frozen treats. They have tried each and every one of the four flavors and not a single drip has been left to chance. They are very good at doing their dishes!

Can you believe there are only two weeks left until Thanksgiving? With family and company coming in throughout the holidays I'm excited and looking forward to seeing the people I miss most during the year.

Tanner and Oliver enjoy family gatherings as much as I do. Their enthusiasm for visitors is evident in the wagging tails and their race to the front door each time the bell rings. This is their favorite part, with the possible exception of the smell of wonderful foods cooking.

Gone are the days of tennis balls that lay in landfills forever. Plastic ball throwers move aside. Planet Dog's Wood Chuck has stepped in with an Eco-friendly chucker for girls like me who are eternally throwing-challenged.

Made of a bamboo body with reused cork scraps for a grippable, sweatproof handle, the bambo Wood Chuck doesn't stop there at sustainability. The ball that comes loaded in its throwing mechanism is an Orbee-Tuff RecycleBall. Check out what I learned about this Earth-friendly product at their website:

"What other toy company takes their leftover material and makes productive use of it? We don't know of any. Our RecycleBALLS® are made from "regrind" - 100% 1st quality Orbee-Tuff® material that would otherwise be discarded."

When our Planet Dog Wood Chuck arrived, Tanner and I had to head for the dog park, where there was room for a real thrower to show off! As it turned out, Tanner enjoyed a great game of Fetch with a friendly Chocolate Lab as well, while other dogs experimented with the chewability of the toy intermittently. Suffice it to say this ball got a good workout. Despite its softer feel and flexibility, it has continued to hold up well under numerous power jaws it has come in contact with.

All balls eventually split, and when they do, they deserve the proper burial, out of Fido's reach in the recycle bin or dumpster. Don't leave a torn or busted ball out for play, as this becomes a dangerous plaything. Replacement Orbee-Tuff RecycleBalls are available at pet superstores and online.

Planet Dog's labeling for the Wood Chuck also mentions that some tennis balls fit nicely into the holder. It simply depends on the age and wear of the ball, which affect its flexibility for fitting into the holder.

No laughing at my throwing form. I know I throw like a girl. You don't see Tanner complaining, now do you? Of course not! He knows a good Fetch game always starts with mom. After all, Mom taught Tanner the game. Enjoy the show. Then let's have some fun with a giveaway. We love a sustainable toy!

Dog Park Exploration and Sustainable Materials

Have you been hearing a lot about the sustainability of Bamboo? What's the deal with that? Maybe you read the Bamboo collar review I did for Pure Pup Shop last week. This product makes a nice fabric, as well as fast-growing grass. We generally think of it as wood, although in fact, it is not wood. Ask the Vet with Dr. Mark: Arthritis Treatment & Prevention

Dear Dr. Mark, I would like some general advice on the use of glucosamine/chondroitin /MSM preparations. Is there anything I should look for in terms of manufacturing or formulas?, what mg. dosage for different sized dogs? (I have several in a variety of weights from teacup to 100 lbs.), do you advise use of all 3 or just gluc./ chon.?, once daily or split up? , and what age to begin for prevention of arthritis? Also, since larger dogs live shorter lives, should I begin giving earlier and begin later for tiny dogs? Are there any breeds that may not need this prevention or are not prone to hip or knee/elbow problems? Is this treatment helpful for luxating patellas? Sorry for so many questions but I think they are all related. Thanks for the help.

Dear R-,

These are great questions. Not all glucosamine supplements are created equal. The main problem on the nutraceutical side of the house is there is no regulating body, like the FDA, to make sure that the product does what it says it does. This makes sticking with a reputable brand VERY important. This is the most important thing to consider when purchasing a glucosamine supplement. The only glucosamine supplement for dogs that has been evaluated in a clinical study is Dasuquin with MSM. In my book, it is the best. Other name brands that I have had good results with are Phycox and Glyco Flex III. These are the only 3 that I would ever recommend. You absolutely get what you pay for. Getting the giant bottle at Costco for 5 dollars is literally a waste of money and will not help your dog at all. The 3 supplements I mentioned all have MSM. I would not use one without it. MSM is a natural anti-inflammatory and improves the efficacy of the supplement.

I do not routinely recommend a glucosamine supplement unless there is an underlying issue that will lead to arthritis sooner in life, such as known hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, medial patellar luxation, or some other condition that causes instability in a joint. In this situation, the sooner they start getting the supplement, the better. Any kind of joint instability will lead to arthritis much sooner than it would normally happen.

Giving the supplement once or twice a day does not matter. When I have a dog that needs it, I give it once a day.

Any individual of any breed can have joint problems. Large breeds tend to be over represented with hip dysplasia, yet small dogs have hip problems as well, we just call it something different. So, I take each case and evaluate on a case-by-case basis. I do not routinely put German Shepherds on these supplements just because they are the poster children for hip dysplasia. It needs to be diagnosed, or at least be suspect because of limping, first.

On a final note, there are MANY options for managing arthritis in dogs, a glucosamine supplement is only one. Non-steroidal anti-inflamatories, steroids, pain medications, Omega-3 fatty acids, Hill's J/D diet, Adequan, and acupuncture are other very helpful options.

My Secretary

A few of my ~~mom's~~ secretary's friends who follow this blog complains that she is almost non-existent on here. And that it might be nice for readers to see who's the slave behind these posts. Well, aside from mentions of her feeding and walking us, she is pretty much non-existent on here...BOL.

I've had this blog since 2006 and I think there are less than a handful of pics of her shared. Which is fine with me because it's MY blog. But I decided to be open-minded just for this one day.

Most of these are old(er) pics. Apologies to those who have seen these on Facebook already!

This is when mom first brought me home 9 years ago. We both looked so young then! She says her biggest regret is not taking more pics with me back then.

This is me at mom's university graduation. She made me attend because I helped her through school. Uncle B was holding me.

I'm not sure why she didn't bring me to her first graduation though. Maybe I wasn't much help then?

This is mom (middle) and her sisters, aka my aunties. They love me a lot and I love them heaps in return.

This is a recent one from May of mom and Auntie C. It was a "girls' night out" and I have no idea where they went, but they were rude enough not to invite me! I'm a girl!

And lastly, just because I'm the most impawtant, here's one of myself at 8 weeks old versus 8 years old. I promise I'm the same dog.

Dad's good friends bought him a set of Beats By Dr. Dre STUDIO headphones for his birthday. How very nice of them!

Of course we had to check it out and try it ourselves. These are worth $400, so we were told to be verrry careful with them.

Adoptable Pets: A Tour of States Checks out New Jersey

My weekly visit to the Petfinder site always brings a few surprises. NJ appears to be teeming with Cane Corso Mastiffs. This sweet girl, Angie Wow Wow, was taken when found emaciated. She is now healthy and still a youngster at 1 1/2 to 2 years, and has gained weight and proven to be a good housemate for other dogs and cats alike. Now all she needs to make her life whole is a family to call her own. You can see Angie in Monroe, NJ, where she is being fostered.

Piper is a young, female Whippet/Hound mix that has a wonderful disposition. While she enjoys attention and human interaction, she also has the ability to entertain herself with toys for long periods of time. Piper is available for adoption in West Windsor, NJ.

Meet Scout, a young, curious, fearless fella who is quite the explorer. Scout is available for adoption in Hightstown, NJ. Please check him out.

Baby Girl Allie

Baby Girl Allie was given up by her former owner because she was not affectionate enough. Perhaps a different approach was all Allie needed, as her foster mom has worked with her and found her to be quite friendly. She has also determined that Allie will "sell her soul for a bunny treat", making the way to this girl's hear through her stomach. She'll make a wonderful pet and is available for adoption in Cream Ridge, NJ.

Dog Park Double Gates and the "Come" Command

Check out these double gates and you'll quickly see why dog parks need them. If only one gate were installed here, the dogs would all be out and the owners would be singing the blues:

Last weekend our Sunday trek to the dog park took a sudden turn from fun into a moment of fear. Fortunately for us, Tanner's training kicked in. Here's what happened, and I share this as a lesson in what can occur if you don't have a great "Come when called" and double gates at the park that are all closed.

Tanner is a natural Houdini. He opens gates, crates, child-guard latches, zippers and yes, even dog park gates. Two of my kids (I can still call them kids, right?) were home for a visit and we all ventured to the dog park for a little fetching fun. When the kids headed back to the car for the forgotten ball, Tanner decided to let himself out and follow along.

One of the park visitors who was coming in as Tanner was letting himself out gave a holler and alerted me to the situation, as I was at the other end tending to Oliver. One "Tanner! Come!" and he bolted back to the park, looking confused about his family being split into two groups. Nevertheless, he knew what Come means and Come he did.

As I swallowed the lump in my throat, Tanner ran to me, licking my face and simultaneously looking back at his "kids". "It's okay, boy. You stay with me", I told him and he followed me back to the group of dogs that were enjoying a cooler than usual day of frolicking.

I'm no professional dog trainer, but COME is IMHO, THE most important command you can teach your dog to protect him from danger that he may not be aware of. Take the time to work on it; he's worth it.

Each week you guys make me laugh with your fun captions and cute photos. I always wish I could give one of every product to each and every one of you. At the very least, I do enjoy sharing the photos that you send me. I hope you do too.

The Eco Dog collars offered by Pure Pup Shop were most certainly a big hit. Two hundred eighty-one of you read the post so far and there were 208 entries in one week. {Tofu} Sleep Hidden!

I was just minding my own business, taking a sunny day afternoon nap when I was AMBUSHED by an annoying pawparazzi.

At first I tried to continue sleeping like nothing was happening.

But then it started to get too bothersome.

I thought maybe if I gave her a shot that was different from the rest (i.e. non-sleeping with eyes kind of open), she would finally leave me alone. *purrraying*

Did it work? Nope.

Are you serious? What else do you want from me? Now I am extremely crabilated.

Lesson of the Day: NEVER, ever sleep in a wide open space where you can be spotted by the pawparazzis. Choose a cave, if you must. I think from now on, I'll be sleeping in tight enclosed spaces only.
